Often refered to as the Backbone of Britain the BR 21 Ton hopper wagons can trace lineage back to 1935. Over 9000 were built by various wagon builders by the time nationalisation came in 1948. The design evolved and BR continued to build these with eventually over 23000 being completed. They came under a variety of guises and could be refered to 21T hoppers, HOP21's HTO and HTV's. Numerous upgrades were made and some of the more notable were the move to welded body work and the addition of 5 upright strengtheners and vacuum brakes. Further development including stronger springs let to an upgrade to 25 T. These wagons were used throughout England & Wales. Standard liveries were present with BR freight grey being the predominant colour. As BR moved away from vacuum brakes wagons and moved towards HEA hopper wagons for domestic coal supply the HTO/HTV wagons were withdrawn, sold or repurposed. A large number however had their bodywork removed and replaced with a box body for carrying spoil. This gave the wagons chassis a new lease of life which took them through to the 2000.
